Playing without much bench relief all season has presented a true challenge for the Madison College women’s basketball team.
The team has often been competitive early in games, but then fades as fatigue sets in.
Such has been the case in many of the six games the team has played since the end of the fall semester. As a result, the team has experienced double-digit defeats in every game.
Still, the season has had its highlights despite the team’s 1-16 record.
Most recently, sophomore guard Kayla Staveness scored a career high 31 points in a 100-45 loss to Clarke University JV on Jan. 11.
Staveness hit six of nine 3-point shots and made all nine of her free throws. She also had eight rebounds to lead the team.
After playing at Rock Valley College on Jan. 16, Madison College will host Black Hawk College on Jan. 20 at noon.

Elgin Community College 77, Madison College 38
Madison College had no trouble scoring against Elgin early in their game on Jan. 6, racing to a 17-7 lead in the first six minutes. But the hot shooting didn’t last as Elgin held the WolfPack to just one point in the third quarter and handed Madison College a 77-38 loss.
Staveness and Kaylee Anzalone led the WolfPack effort. Staveness scored 24 points to lead Madison College, while Anzalone added a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

College of DuPage 56,  Madison College 22
After a competitive first quarter that saw Madison College hit three 3-point shots, College of DuPage shut down the WolfPack, allowing them just 13 more points in a 56-22 loss on Jan. 4. Staveness led the team with 14 points and 10 rebounds, recording the first double-double of her career.

Gogebic Community College 77, Madison College 41
Gogebic outscored Madison College, 21-7, in the second quarter to defeat the WolfPack, 21-7, in the second game of the Wisconsin Dells Holiday Classic on Dec. 30.
Staveness led Madison College with 15 points, while freshman Emily Rottier-Douangmala had 13 points. A highlight was when freshman Mirella Zielke, who played soccer this fall, scored her first career points with a jump shot two minutes into the second half.
