In 2023, audiences were delighted as Mario and Luigi, the beloved Italian brothers, made their way back to the big screen. The film reintroduced these iconic characters alongside familiar faces from the classic games that many of us grew up playing.
The brothers return with Princess Peach, Toad, new allies and foes in “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” released April 1.
The movie begins with Princess Rosalina (Brie Larson) being kidnapped by Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie) who plans to drain her of her power to fuel a universe-destroying cannon in honor of his father, Bowser (Jack Black).
Back in the Mushroom world, Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) are called to inspect a disturbance in Tostarena Town. There they run into an adorable, loving dinosaur called Yoshi (Donald Glover).
The brothers decided to befriend Yoshi and the three of them return to the Mushroom Kingdom, where a Luma, a star “child” of Rosalina, asks Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) to help save Rosalina.
Peach and Toad accept her request and leave the Mushroom Kingdom with Mario, Luigi and Yoshi to protect the Kingdom. Everything is going smoothly for them, until Bowser Jr. shows up and lifts Peach’s castle up in a beam to free his father.
Bowser Jr. brings Peach’s castle into space to free his father, but a fight with Mario, Luigi and Yoshi causes the castle to fall into the Honeyhive Galaxy. Bowser provokes Mario, becomes unshrunk and offers to be arrested if the group is sent to the Gateway Galaxy. Bowser is then abducted by his son. In the Gateway Galaxy, a monkey steals Toad’s backpack and takes it to a casino run by Wart (Luis Guzman). Peach battles Wart’s minions, forcing him to reveal Rosalina is in the Space Junk Galaxy before alerting the Bowsers about Peach.
Mario, Luigi and Yoshi eventually join up again with Peach and Toad, who have already recruited Pilot Fox McCloud (Glen Powell), the renowned leader of the Star Fox team made famous by the 1990s video game.
After Fox’s Arwing crashes into Fossil Falls due to Bowser Jr., who turns Mario and Luigi into babies with a Super Scope, Yoshi finds the device, saves them from a Tyrannosaurus and restores their ages.
Luigi calls the Lumas for help and at the Comet Observatory, Peach learns she shares powers with Rosalina, her sister. Both were born from stardust, and Rosalina sent infant Peach to the Mushroom Kingdom for her safety.
Fox, Toad and the Lumas use the Comet Observatory to send Mario, Peach, Luigi and Yoshi to Planet Bowser. Mario battles and defeats Bowser, who survives in a skeletal form, and with help from Luigi and Yoshi, overcomes him again using power-ups.
Peach revives Rosalina, transforming Planet Bowser into a new world. Mario, Luigi, Yoshi and others rebuild Peach’s castle, and Fox sends the Bowsers to prison before returning to his galaxy.
“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” stands out as an excellent continuation of the Mario World series. The film skillfully balances humor with genuine emotional moments, drawing audiences into the story and leaving them eagerly anticipating what comes next.
It serves as both a gateway for newcomers and a nostalgic journey for longtime fans. By weaving in references to beloved Mario games, the film creates moments of recognition that resonate with those who grew up playing them.
Additionally, the inclusion of Star Fox is a thoughtful tribute to the older generation of gamers, further connecting the movie to classic video game history and broadening its appeal across different age groups.
