Most days on campus begin quietly. A door is unlocked before the first class lets out. A lamp is switched on. A computer is logged in before anyone arrives. It’s a small moment, easy to miss – but it’s often a student worker who makes it happen.
Student workers are part of the rhythm of campus life. They are there between classes, after long days and sometimes late into the evening, balancing their own responsibilities while helping others navigate theirs.
They answer questions, troubleshoot technology, offer directions and provide a steady presence in spaces designed for learning and belonging. Their work is woven into our daily routines so seamlessly that it can disappear into the background – but it shouldn’t.
These jobs aren’t just about staffing a desk or following a checklist. For many student workers, library and student achievement center employment is where professional confidence takes root and grows. Over time, students move from learning the basics to taking ownership of their work – anticipating needs and handling complex situations with growing ease. Problem‑solving skills are practiced daily, communication becomes more intentional and empathy deepens through regular interaction with others.
Students learn how to manage expectations, take responsibility and stay steady when things don’t go as planned. This growth happens gradually, shift by shift, as experience builds – often quietly and without formal recognition.
There is also work that never makes it into a job description. The patience shown during stressful moments. The warmth extended to someone who may be having a difficult day. The adaptability required when schedules change or when a simple request turns complicated.
Student workers carry a great deal of responsibility, and they do so while still being students themselves – managing deadlines, exams, family obligations and the everyday challenges of college life.
Appreciating student workers isn’t just about saying thank you, though that matters. It’s about recognizing that our campus spaces are stronger because of them. Their insights, questions and perspectives shape how services evolve and how communities grow. Staff and departments don’t just support student workers – we learn from them, rely on them and are better because they are here.
As the academic year draws to a close, some student workers are preparing to graduate or move on to new opportunities.
Others will return in the fall, bringing experience and confidence with them. Wherever they are headed next, the skills they’ve built and the care they’ve shown will go with them.
To all our student workers in the Madison College Libraries and Student Achievement Centers – your work matters. Even when it feels routine or goes unnoticed. You are an essential part of this campus, and we are grateful for the dedication, patience and professionalism you bring every day. Thank you for being here – and for everything you’ve contributed.
Grateful for the students behind the desk
