Recovery corner: Rockin’ Recovery Rally is Sept. 19

Patrick Kempfer, Opinion Editor

September is National Alcohol and Drug Awareness Recovery Month. This is bound to be a very exciting month for the recovering population, as President Obama is set to host a recovery month dinner and online press conference at the White House on Sept. 17.

If you’re looking for something a little more local, then head to the Wisconsin Capital building the morning of Sept. 19 and be a part of the Rockin’ Recovery Rally. Featured speakers at the rally will include Dr. Everett Mitchell, the director of community relations for the University of Wisconsin-Madison; Green Bay Packers Hall of Famer Chester Marcol; Rep. LaTonya Johnson, a champion of prevention programs; and Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel.

The purpose of the event is to raise awareness of the ever-growing population of people living in long-term recovery in the area and to bring attention to the devastating effects addiction is having on our community. Everyone knows or has known someone affected by addiction, but not everyone knows someone in long-term recovery.

If you have yet to know what a person in long-term recovery looks like, please join us for a day filled with food, music, face painting, and an opportunity to witness the real life miracles of recovery.

The rally begins at 11 a.m. on the Wisconsin Capital steps, looking down upon the State Street Mall, and will go on until 2 p.m. Tell your family, tell your friends, tell the world that you support the recovery community of Wisconsin, and show it by making the Wisconsin State Capital your destination on Sept. 19.
