Make sure you are ready to vote Nov. 6

There are several offices up for election on the Nov. 6 ballot including Governor, Attorney General, U.S. Senator and Representatives. You can go to MyVote.WI.gov to check your registration, confirm your polling place, see what is on your ballot, or start the registration process.

If you have never voted, moved, have a name change, or are new to Wisconsin you will need to register to vote.

Here are some things to consider when registering to vote:

Online voter registration: If you have a valid Wisconsin driver license or Wisconsin DMV ID card and your current name and address are in the Division of Motor Vehicles database, you can register online.  If you need to update your address at the DMV you can do that at DMV changes.  Then complete your registration at MyVote.WI.gov. The address on your physical drivers license or ID does not matter and does not need to be changed.

Don’t have a current WI drivers license or ID card? You can register at your clerk’s office, by mail, or, if a Madison resident, at any Madison Public Library.  You will need to provide proof of residence/address along with the registration form. You can use a paper form or complete one online at MyVote.WI.gov and print it out.

Registering by mail? You will need to include a copy of your proof of residence.  Send the completed registration form and proof of residence to your clerk’s office. Proof of residence must show your name and current address. Acceptable proof of residence can be found here.

Deadlines: Voters can register online or by mail until 20 days before Election Day or at their clerk’s office until the Friday before an election.  Voter can also register at the polls on election day, with proper proof of residence, but registering early is highly recommend.

Photo ID: An approved photo ID will be required when voting. You can use a Wisconsin driver license, a Wisconsin state ID card, a U.S. passport, or military ID with expiration dates of Nov. 8, 2016 or later (out-of-state ID’s can’t be used).  The address on an ID does not have to be current.  For a complete list of approved photo ID’s go to bringitwisconsin.com.

If you don’t have an acceptable photo ID you can get a free ID at a DMV office. However, if you have an out-of-state driver license you would have to surrender that license in order to get the Wisconsin ID.   For information about the DMV process see wisconsindot.gov

Madison College students who do not have one of the approved ID’s can get a special student ID from the Student Life Office at the Downtown and Truax campuses or at the front office at other campuses.  Students using the special student ID will also need to show proof of enrollment when voting.
