Members of the Madison College newspaper, The Clarion, won seven awards at the Associated Collegiate Press Best of the Midwest Newspaper Convention on Feb. 18 in Minneapolis.

The newspaper won first-place Best of Show in the two-year college newspaper category, and first-place Best of Show for websites.

The collaborative efforts of two groups of students earned recognition in the multimedia category of the Best of Show competition.

Jessica Deegan, Jessica Pokrandt and Max Goldberg won first place in the multimedia competition for an online package about the college’s welding program. Deegan wrote the news article, Goldberg shot the video and added still photographs, and Pokrandt edited and produced the video.

A team including Andrew Kicmol, Sean Bull and Alexandra Christensen took second place in the multimedia competition for their work on an online story about the college’s concussion protocol. Kicmol wrote the article, Bull shot and produced the video and Christensen created an info-graphic.

Stephen Fabal is the newspaper’s web editor and helped create both packages on the newspaper’s website, www.theonlineclarion.com.

Kicmol and Christensen also earned first-place recognition in two other categories. Kicmol won first place in sports reporting, while Christensen received first-place in page design. Goldberg earned another award as well, placing fifth in news photography.

The Clarion is published every other Wednesday throughout the school year and is available online at www.theonlineclarion.com.
