Sgt. Joe Steffen

Public Safety Officers respond to many calls for service and we communicate our activities to the college community.  Here are some of the notable incidents from the past couple weeks.

On Oct. 10, at 6:30 p.m., a Public Safety officer observed a male sleeping on a patio bench at the Downtown Campus. Public Safety made contact with the male who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. The person admitted to not being a current student at Madison College and was verbally warned for trespassing and escorted off the property without incident.

On Oct. 7, at 3:11 a.m., a Public Safety Officer observed a vehicle parked on the service road that accesses the over flow parking. The officer informed Capitol Police dispatch he would be checking on the vehicle and provided them with the vehicles registration. The officer observed nobody was inside the vehicle, the doors were unlocked, and the keys were in the ignition.

Capitol Police advised that the vehicle had been reported stolen in Eau Claire and Wisconsin State Capitol Police would be responding to help investigate further. Public Safety staff assisted Capitol Police as needed and the vehicle was eventually towed off the property. The investigation was taken over by Wisconsin State Capitol Police who will be working with Eau Claire Police Department to return the vehicle to its owner.

On October 3, 2016 Public Safety staff was notified of a medical emergency at the Foundation Centre. Officers responded and were directed into the men’s restroom by Foundation Centre staff where a visitor of the college had lost consciousness. The man was able regain consciousness and communicate with the officers on scene. Madison Paramedics arrived on scene shortly after and the visitor was transported to a local hospital to be evaluated further by medical staff.
