Lucille is an upscale pizza restaurant located in downtown Madison. They are best known for their wood fire and “Wisco-Detroit” style pizza. On their website, they stand for humility, collaboration, respect and justice, love, equity and inclusiveness. In addition, for every “Queen Pizza” sold, they donate $1 to Domestic Abuse Intervention Services (DAIS) and include their helpline on their menu.
On Google reviews, they have 4.4 stars out of over 2,000 reviews. Reservations here are not the easiest to get, especially for the weekends. From what I have seen, you will want to book at least two weeks in advance if you want a Saturday or Sunday reservation.
For an appetizer, I got the birria tacos. They came with four and were about $21. Unlike authentic birria tacos, they were not dunked in the birria sauce before being grilled. Furthermore, I do not think they were as flavorful compared to different recipes I have tried in the past. They were overall good, but I would not reorder them because I do not think they were worth the price. Overall, a 6.5. I would suggest trying these at an authentic Mexican restaurant instead.
For my entrée, I ordered the wood fire pizzas. I ate “The Queen” which is the most popular in addition, $1 went to DAIS, which felt great. The Queen has tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, basil, extra virgin olive oil and Sar Vecchio parmesan.
The pizza looked amazing; it looked like an authentic Italian pizza. The crust was probably my favorite, it was very light and fluffy. The toppings were great, although the sauce could have had more flavor. The 14-inch was $22, leaving me with great leftovers the next day. Overall, I would give the pizza an 8.
My friend gave me a slice of the “Mediterranean.” The toppings were basil, arugula pistou, feta, mozzarella, artichoke hearts, cherry tomatoes, Kamalata olives, spinach and red onions, skipping on the artichokes. Because of the many ingredients, I liked this more. The 14-inch was $28. I would rate this one an 8.5.
I decided to skip dessert, but I will admit I do wish I tried something. Overall, this was a nice experience. I have always wanted to come here and loved their business values.
Other than the food, I would rate the service above average and the atmosphere was nice. The soft lighting and Christmas decorations were fun. If I had a special occasion, I would consider spending it at Lucille.
