Movie review: ‘Non-Stop’ full of action

Tom Richardson, Staff writer

Imagine how scary it would be to be on a plane, in which a passenger gets killed every 20 minutes. Liam Neeson and Julianne Moore had to deal with a situation like this, in the new action thriller film “Non-Stop.”

In “Non-Stop,” Air Marshal Bill Marks (Liam Neeson) is aboard a plane which holds a passenger who keeps sending him text messages, requesting a large sum of money be deposited in an account. Someone on the plane will be killed every 20 minutes, until this money is in their possession. Marks does everything he can on the plane to make everyone calm, while also accurately looking for the person responsible for these text message threats. But as the killings keep happening on this plane, and the passengers are starting to think that Bill Marks himself might be the terrorist, it becomes harder and harder for Bill Marks to find the man responsible for these killings. Julianne Moore plays passenger Jen Summers, who helps out the air marshal for this terrorist situation.

“Non-Stop” is a film that is very much aware that it takes place on a plane, as it uses it’s tight-space environment to it’s fullest advantage. Liam Neeson’s interaction with a cop passenger and a little girl passenger throughout the film, also provide opportunities for this character to learn things about himself that he wasn’t aware of until boarding this plane. The film also does a brilliant job holding the suspense, by always keeping its viewers guessing.

“Non-Stop” rarely has problems, but it does have a few flaws. Some viewers might find that this film is almost too identical to the films “Source Code” and “Passenger 57.” Certain traits of the Bill Marks character, such as aspects of his personal life, seem to be completely abandoned for a large portion of this film, which could have made him a more interesting character, by the film’s end. The film also runs into some timing issues, such as the 20-minute periods where a passenger would get killed, feels much longer than 20 minutes in reality.

For fans of Liam Neeson, and for fans of action thrillers, “Non-Stop” is a very entertaining film, that knows exactly what it’s doing, and it executes its goals very well. Be sure to check this film out.
