The Got The ‘Suicide’ Part Right

Sabrina Coonen, Staff Writer

The movie that comic goers have been waiting for ever since the thrilling trailer was released in January has finally made its debut, and the film wasn’t exactly what people were expecting.

I have to say that I was bouncing-of-the-walls-excited for this film. The initial trailer was not only intense, spectacular, and hilarious, but the song choice, Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, made it absolutely breathtaking. The trailer made me feel like the director, David Ayer, and Warner Bros. were actually trying something new and unexpected with this film universe.

The resulting movie turned out to be a huge disappointment.

For a non-comic reader, the movie’s plot was quite a rollercoaster and quite difficult to follow. Having such a thin plot that was both easily predictable, but also completely inconsistent made the side stories for each of the characters more interesting than what was actually going on in the movie.

The set and action scenes were not very impressive given the $175 million budget. The producers seemed to have been more concerned with getting big name actors, such as Margot Robbie and Will Smith, than things like character development, an understandable plot, or a better script.

Most of the focus of the movie was on the characters of Deadshot and Harley Quinn. Jared Leto’s modern Joker was marvelous to watch but almost instantly gets shoved into a secondary character status because his story is almost entirely restricted to his interactions with Harley Quinn, rather than the status of a main character.

The other members of the Squad received small monologues meant to jerk tears from the audience, but that attention was soon swept away by the big, bad showdown with Enchantress.

There was way too much cliche in the plot and not enough time given to character development, but the move was not a total waste of time. It was still a solid two hours of entertainment with jokes, action, and romance.

In conclusion, Suicide Squad, the latest of DC’s subtle try to make Marvel-ous films, has been shot dead.
