New Year’s resolutions you can stick to

Sticking to New Year’s resolutions can be tricky, especially if your goals are vague and/or complicated. Simple consistency leads to surprising results though, even from small changes. If your New Year’s Resolutions seem overambitious or less important than you originally thought, try working one of these healthy habits into your daily routine.

Oil Pulling

This ancient Ayurvedic technique boasts benefits from trapping harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi and flotsam by pulling it from between your teeth to be safely spat out. It prevents the buildup of plaque, bad breath, and cavities. Grab a spoonful of oil, organic raw coconut works best, and swish it around between your teeth, mouth, and gums with your tongue for 15-45 minutes. Start at 5 minutes and work up if the consistency is strange at first.

Oil pulling can save you money at the dentist by protecting your teeth from cavities and plaque build up. It also removes bacteria and viruses that make and keep people sick. Oil pulling while ill can also promote a quickened recovery.  For best results, do this first thing in the morning.

Spirulina

This freshwater algae is considered a “new” superfood, though it is actually thousands of years old. Spirulina is better for you than you can possibly imagine. Its an excellent source of plant protein, vitamins, minerals and magical properties that remove toxins from the blood, reduce allergies and save people from arsenic poisoning.

Bangladesh’s water supply is heavily contaminated with arsenic. Millions of people drink poisoned water on a daily basis and, until recently, doctors had no cure to treat the thousands of people who were already experiencing symptoms. In one study, 82 percent of patients with arsenic poisoning responded positively to treatment with this blue-green superfood.

If you’re vegan or vegetarian, Spirulina is an excellent way to supplement some of the protein those omnivores continually brag about. Spirulina boasts an impressive 65-71 percent complete protein, compared to measly 22 percent for beef. No, you can’t put it on the barbeque, but you can put it in a smoothie! A teaspoon delivers all you need, 3-5 grams is the recommended serving. Spirulina can be found as loose powder, capsules, flakes, and tablets. Organic sourcing is important, since pollutants in the water will also be present in the algae.

Get Up.

Research continues to prove that one of the most deadly aspects of modern life is the tendency to sit and stare at a screen for lengthy, uninterrupted periods of time. Our bodies crave movement, and they atrophy at a cellular level when we don’t interact with gravity because our bums are parked in chairs. You don’t have to do burpees in your cubicle (but it you want to be that person, that’s cool too), just taking a thirty-second break to stand up and stretch makes a difference in your health.

Make a Happiness Jar.

Everyday, write down a great part of your day onto a slip on paper and put it in a glass jar. As the year rolls on, the jar will fill with grateful memories. Pick one out if you’re feeling blue and remember something you were thankful for.
