I’m not entirely sure how to start this, but I guess I should introduce myself.
Hello, my name is Sara Bernabe. Don’t worry if you can’t pronounce the last name, no one can. Just call me B. I’m a liberal arts transfer student, hoping to major in journalism at UW-Madison.
I don’t think of myself as an editor, let alone the editor. Part of that is because I can’t spell for my life, but also because I haven’t been at Madison College for very long.
Last year, I graduated high school and moved out of the nowhere town I grew up in. My house was built right between a bar and a cornfield, so safe to say Madison is a lot different from home. I’m still getting used to that.
The fall semester marks my second year at Madison College, as well as my second year with the Clarion. Can you believe that? Barely two years with the newspaper and somehow I’m here, editor in chief! It’s crazy.
But want to know something even crazier? Within those two years, I’ve somehow won two journalism awards thanks to the Clarion. One of them was even gifted to the team at the National Journalism Conference.
That being said, I do have a confession to make: I haven’t taken a single journalism class at Madison College. Yep, not even one. While I did take classes when I was in high school, that is the extent of my journalism knowledge.
My point in telling you this is for you to know that I’m still learning too. I have a long way to go before I can confidently call myself a journalist, but I want to grow alongside all of you.
Our community, our school and clubs have opened so many doors for me, and I couldn’t be more thankful for that. I don’t know what my future with the Clarion will look like, and that’s what makes it so exciting. I look forward to this new chapter of my college years.
Every day is a new opportunity, for all of us. Go out, learn lessons and make memories. I’ll be here to document them all so we never forget them.
