As the new school year begins, returning members of the Clarion staff would like to welcome you back to campus and provide a few tips for how to be a successful student this semester.
Do your homework right after class.
Study with students from your classes.
Use a calendar to keep track of homework. You will not be disappointed when it reminds you a week before the assignment is due.
Use instructors’ office hours.
Ask questions.
Time management: Working alongside school means a busy schedule, so it’s important to be as structured as possible. Take time for assignments, yourself, and other responsibilities.
Don’t overcommit.
Read the material and use flashcards.
Make time for a 20-minute power nap before or between classes. It helps a lot with focus in class.
Use the pomodoro technique when studying: 25 minutes on, 5 minutes doing something completely unrelated. Repeat.
Find the Student Achievement Center and use tutors appropriate to your subject matter.
The Writing Center is a wonderful place to get help with writing assignments, as they can provide lots of helpful feedback.
Adopt a growth mindset.
Join an organization. Take advantage of the variety of clubs we have here on campus: you can meet great people.
Don’t skip classes, even if the instructor doesn’t take attendance.
Stick to a regular study schedule. If you don’t have homework due, review your notes and make sure you understand the material.
