Representatives from technical colleges across the state gathered at Chippewa Valley Technical College in Eau Claire on Oct. 3 through Oct. 4 for the first Wisconsin Student Government (WSG) meeting of the academic year.
Madison College proudly sent a strong and diverse delegation to this statewide leadership event. Our team included Lieutenant Governor Jagadeesh Sanjay, advisor Cole Kallio-Crotteau, experienced senators Annette Rowder and Correy Sertzel and Vice President Quinn Mattsson. All represented Madison College with dedication and passion.
As the Governor of Madison College Student Senate and an international student, I was honored to represent not only our college but also the diverse voices that make up our student body.
It was inspiring to connect with fellow student leaders from across Wisconsin who share a commitment to advocacy, inclusion and collaboration.
During the meeting, Madison College presented several key priorities to ensure that our students’ voices were heard at the state level.
Out of the 12 statewide priorities discussed, four were proposed by our delegation:
- Sustainability improvements: Promoting environmentally responsible practices across Wisconsin technical colleges.
- Support for international students: Highlighting the importance of making Wisconsin a student-friendly state and positioning it as a global education hub in the long term.
- Transferable credits expansion: Addressing the growing discussion about two-year colleges offering four-year degrees. Policy Advisor Brandon Trujillo explained that, under the agreement between WTCS and the UW System, WTCS institutions cannot offer four-year degrees while UW colleges will not open two-year programs. Therefore, Madison College proposed prioritizing the expansion of transferable credits to strengthen student mobility between systems.
- Mental health support: Emphasizing the urgent need for stronger mental health resources and awareness across campuses.
The priority selection process is still ongoing, as delegates decided to table the discussions to allow more time for research and feedback from student bodies across the state.
Attending this meeting reminded me how powerful student voices can be when we work together.
The Madison College delegation returned from Eau Claire inspired and motivated to apply new insights and initiatives that will strengthen student life and representation on our campus.
