‘Tower Heist’ brings in star power, lots of laughs

Brittany Durst, Clarion Office Manager

“Tower Heist” is a creative movie that succeeds in being fun as well as funny. This interesting spin on a heist-style movie brings together a wide range of actors and actresses including Eddie Murphy, Ben Stiller, Matthew Broderick, Alan Alda, Téa Leoni and Gabourey Sidibe.

Josh Kovacs (Stiller) plays the manager of “The Tower,” a luxurious high- rise apartment complex. Owner and millionaire Arthur Shaw (Alda) lives in a luxurious apartment located at the very tip of the tower. Kovacs has been a loyal friend and serviceman to Shaw, and takes it pretty hard when the FBI catches Shaw trying to flee from the state because of felony-fraud charges he is accused of. Shaw leaves his entire Tower staff without a cent’s worth of life savings.

When FBI agent Claire Denham says that there is little hope in recovering the pensions, Kovacs makes the decision to steal millions of dollars supposedly hidden away in Shaw’s home.

Overall, the film is very enjoyable, as long as you do not look too closely at the details. The movie feels believable and misleads the viewer at times, like an actual heist. Kovac’s helpers are not your typical criminals and don’t seem the types to commit a crime. Having no experience in criminal activity, they have no choice but to call in an expert, Slide (Murphy). Kovacs and his companions tend to be gullible, however, forgetting that Slide has a lot of experience in criminal acts.

“Tower Heist” is very enjoyable, and does an excellent job getting a laugh from the characters. This movie creates quite an adventure and plot mazes that will be sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. Be prepared, though, to close your eyes if you’re afraid of heights. During the gang’s adventure, they encounter a bump in the road and find themselves dangling outside the middle of a skyscraper.

The film is rated PG-13, and is 104 minutes long. It does contain some strong language and alcohol abuse.
