Latest Marvel film embraces all things strange and unusual in the universe

Sara Hill, Staff Writer

There is an oversaturation of superheroes in the movie industry, and it can be scary to see our favorite characters brought to film. What about that characters that are less known to the general audience?

Welcome to your new favorite Marvel character. “Doctor Strange” has set itself apart from other comic book films, much like the comic itself stands on its own from others, like X-Men, Spiderman, and all of the other greats.

“Doctor Strange” ventures into the mystical, magical side of the world. It acknowledges the mutants of the Marvel universe, but dives headfirst into enchantments and alternate universes. It is a strange comic book series, with weird and intense art throughout the panels. Dr. Steven Strange is an arrogant surgeon who seeks mystical healing after a car crash ruins his hands. He witnesses things he never believed to have exist before. And of course, the action and the bad guys.

The “Doctor Strange” film kept the essence of the comic books intact. They perfectly portrayed the weird that is so well-done in the comics. From the first five minutes until the very end, the film is filled with stunning visuals and physical impossibilities. Some would say that certain effects are similar to films such as “Inception.” I would say it is an expansion on those effects. The fight scenes are stunning, the action and art mingling flawlessly. If the only complaint is that certain scenes are too beautiful to have one aspect to focus on, I will gladly accept that flaw.

Benedict Cumberbatch not only looks as if he were born to play Dr. Steven Strange, but he injects a certain dry humor to the character that is sometimes missing in the comics. The humor did not feel forced, and Cumberbatch portrayed a man who grows from a flawed, arrogant doctor to a patient magician.

“Doctor Strange” is an origin story. As most origin stories, there are certain winks to the hardcore fans in the audience, and some may feel that they are in for a dull plot full of explanation. “Doctor Strange” dropped Steven Strange straight into a world that he didn’t even believe in, allowing the audience to come with him through his journey. His education and experiences are ours. The film did not rely on heavy flashbacks and backstory. It was refreshing to have filmmakers expect more of the audience. We are more than capable of following a story without handholding.

If you love the Marvel universe, there is no need to recommend this film to you. If you are burnt out on superhero films, make this your last one. It is exciting, beautiful, and weird. I highly recommend watching this film in 3D if you can, mostly to appreciate the weird scenery. And take heart if you don’t want to fall back into the superhero trend. He’s not a mutant.

He’s a doctor. With magical powers.
