Many retail stores will boost their employment seasonally to account for an increase in holiday sales.

The holiday season is fast approaching. Even though you may not want to think about the holidays, many employers are starting to hire for seasonal work. Stores like Kohl’s, Duluth Trading Company, Old Navy, Fed-ex and UPS, Wal-Mart, Target, and Macys are now hiring. If you are looking for some extra cash or a way into the retail industry, this is your opportunity.

John Dodge from CBS Chicago said that Kohl’s will hire 50 seasonal employees to meet the demands for the coming holidays. Kohl’s has three department stores in Madison alone and others in Johnson Creek, Beaver Dam, and Janesville. That adds up to 300 job opportunities through one company in Madison and the surrounding area alone.

With online shopping becoming more popular each year, the demand for delivery drivers and organizers will also increase. Last year consumers spent around $82 billion dollars on online shopping.

Cyber Monday is another shopping opportunity that requires numerous deliveries in a timely manner. Analysts expect a 10 percent increase this coming holiday season. Fed-ex and UPS are going to need more workers to keep up with the increase in online sales. Maria Halkias of the Dallas Morning News reports that UPS plans to nearly double their seasonal work force by 95,000 employees. Fed-ex also reported that it will double its holiday hiring by about 50,000 workers.

Wal-Mart is expected to have more check-out lines open during the season which means more workers need to staff those lines.

Still, Walmart, Target and Macys are hiring the same amount of seasonal workers as last year, due to the increase in online shopping. Many of these companies aren’t just looking for cashiers and unskilled labor- there are a variety of higher paying positions that are available. These companies are beginning their hiring at the start of October. Retailers are hoping to have most of these positions filled by mid-November.

Whether you are looking for a long term job or a way to earn a little extra cash, getting your application in as soon as possible is the first step to being hired.
