The ever-evolving Lucero of Memphis, Tenn. made a celebrated return to Madison on April 5. In front of an enthusiastic audience at the Majestic Theatre the band introduced nearly every song from their newly released eighth album, “Women and Work.”
During a show that lasted over two hours the veteran performers provided nonstop entertainment to their adoring fans. Flowing through a set list that skillfully combined new sounds with a variety of fan favorites from records dating back almost 12 years, singer Ben Nichols also managed to incorporate several requests. Foregoing a traditional encore break, band members returned to stage after a few moments to squeeze as much music into their performance as possible.
With songs from every record since 2001, the show provided something for every Lucero fan, from punk-influenced riffs to Memphis-inspired blues and gospel sounds. No matter the song, something new or something they’ve played for years, all eight musicians seemed to be having a great time. On behalf of the entire band, Nichols repeatedly smiled and thanked the crowd for coming out to the show. Throughout the performance it was clear that Lucero has a loyal and growing fan base here in Madison, as almost everyone in attendance could be seen singing along with the music.
