Madison College Library Director Julie Gores gives members of the Student Activities Board a tour of “The Creator Studio.”

Julie Gores, Library Director

The Library will be opening up a new kind of space for students in early Oct. at the Truax campus.  The Creator Studio will be a student-centric, flexible space that will allow participants to learn and discover new skills through tinkering, experimenting, making and collaborating.

Students will be able to explore activities from sketching to creating 3D objects to sewing to toying with circuitry to building massive “Lego” sets together.

It will be a walk-in space and will house a variety of tools and equipment for students to support their creator projects.  Some pre-training will be necessary for use of some of the equipment and a librarian will always be present to assist.  Some examples of equipment and tools available include:

  • 3D Scribbler Pen V3
  • Comb Binding Machine
  • Button Maker
  • Silhouette Curio Cutter
  • Silhouette Mint Stamper
  • Singer Sew Mate 5400
  • Small Loom
  • Microscope Kit
  • Makey Makey Kit
  • Littlebits STEAM Set
  • Mac Computer, Laptops, iPads
  • Internet TV Flat Screen
  • Printer
  • Coming Soon:  3D and Color Printing

In addition, the space will offer a lot of options for “Lego” lovers.  There will be large creator sets that include thousands of pieces as well as the architecture and classic kits for students to tinker with.  Other activities like adult coloring, sketching, painting small wood crafts, gaming, puzzle solving, brain teasers, stationary-making, clay modeling and more will be included in the Creator Studio.

The Studio will also house a how-to collection available for check-out for learning on-the-go.

Fall workshops will include creating stop animation videos, how to use a sewing machine, button making and black-out poetry.  Additional workshops will be forthcoming.

We encourage students to build community, participate in discovery and engage in service learning through the space.   We are looking for potential student partners at this time.

Individuals, student clubs and other organizations that are interested should contact Julie Gores [email protected] or Donna Marconnet [email protected].

Hours for the Creator Studio will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday and will be staffed by librarians.  The space is located just down the hall from the library in room B3211.  Look for more information about the opening of the Studio on social media and the library web site.
