‘Battlefield 1’ promises to please fans of the series

With a long string of releases in EA’s Battlefield series, fans can expect yet another installment on Oct. 21. Battlefield 1, a first person shooter set in World War I, promises just as much, if not more, than its predecessors.

EA released an open beta of Battlefield 1 on Aug. 31 through Sept. 8, and the gameplay looks promising. The graphics are keeping up with today’s standards, with fluid motion and detailed environments ready to be explored.  Ever changing weather allows for a deeper immersion, from beautiful sunny days as explosions hit your face to sandstorms adding a level of difficulty to gameplay.

The demo map was based in the Sinai Desert, which EA claims to be the biggest Battlefield map to date. And their claim is hard to dispute. But the use of vehicles in this game makes it easy to travel from one side to the other. If you don’t like riding the tank, they’ve introduced horses as a mode of transportation. Although the learning curve for combat on horseback seems steep, this promises to be an interesting element.

All weaponry and environments were thoroughly researched by the games designers, so it’s fun to get your hands on all the historically accurate guns they have to offer. But don’t let the antiquity fool you. This is a first person shooter, and if the guns do not work, the game does not work. EA has made sure that the weapons still have the stability and reliability as most modern shooters.

Battlefield 1 offers soldier classes for everyone. Snipers, Medics, Critical Support, and Assault classes allow players to specialize jobs in their multiplayer squads, making a more powerful and effective team. Special classes are available, and they look like they are going to be amazing fun. Flame Trooper is exactly as the name suggests, and that is going to be very exciting.

Critics may have been skeptical about a video game based in the early days of war, but Battlefield 1’s beta shows a glimmer of hope that this can be done exceptionally well. The full game offers a campaign mode as well as the anticipated multiplayer modes. It will be available worldwide on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
